Disney Dollars were introduced in 1987 as a park-exclusive currency redeemable at face value within Disney properties — hotels, shops, restaurants, and ticket booths. The program was designed partly as a souvenir mechanism: Disney collected the float on every note that was never redeemed, which by most estimates amounted to a substantial and consistent annual gain. The 1998 issue falls within the series printed by the American Bank Note Company's successor operations, though Disney was characteristically tight-lipped about its contracted security printer.
The program was discontinued entirely in May 2016, at which point all outstanding notes remained redeemable but were no longer sold — making the float permanent.
