Disney Dollars were introduced in 1987 as a proprietary scrip redeemable at Disney parks and resorts, deliberately sized and weighted to feel like U.S. currency — a calculated design choice that helped guests psychologically detach spending from "real" money. The series was produced by the American Banknote Corporation using intaglio printing on cotton-blend stock, giving the notes a tactile authority most theme park tokens never attempt.
The 2000 release coincided with the Millennium Celebration at Walt Disney World. Disney retired the Dollar program entirely in May 2016, at which point unredeemed notes became collectibles rather than functional scrip.
