The Saffarids were a dynasty of eastern Iranian origin — the founder, Ya'qub ibn al-Layth al-Saffar, began as a coppersmith before seizing Khorasan and Sistan by force. By 911, the dynasty had contracted dramatically from its ninth-century peak; the later Saffarids ruled as vassals under Samanid suzerainty, and coinage from this period reflects that dependency in its mint attributions and formulaic piety. Fars as a mint region had changed hands repeatedly across the preceding decades.
