Obverse description Central field occupied by multiple horizontal lines of Kufic Arabic script arranged in concentric registers, conveying the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) and the name of the Abbasid caliph. The legends are boldly struck in relief against a flat field, characteristic of the Abbasid-influenced dirham tradition. The overall design follows the purely epigraphic style standard to Islamic coinage of the period, with no figurative imagery. The coin exhibits the slightly irregular flan typical of hammered silver dirhams of the early 5th century AH.
