The Idrisids were the first Arab dynasty to establish independent rule in the Maghreb, founded by a descendant of Ali ibn Abi Talib who fled the Abbasid massacre at Fakhkh in 786. By the time Muhammad b. Ahmad was issuing dirhams, the dynasty was fragmenting badly — multiple Idrisid branches controlled competing territories across northern Morocco, each striking their own coinage. This piece belongs to that fractured phase, when the mint system reflected political dissolution rather than central authority.
The underweight flan is characteristic of late Idrisid silver production, not wear.
