Obverse description Central field occupied by four lines of Kufic Arabic script arranged horizontally, conveying the Shahada and related Islamic formulae. The field is plain and unadorned apart from the inscriptions, which are struck in relatively high relief typical of Andalusian hammered dirhams. A circular marginal legend encircles the central text panel, containing the mint and date formula recording the striking at Saraqusta (Zaragoza) in the year 436 AH. The flan is irregular and shows characteristic signs of hand-hammered production, with slight weakness at the edges. The overall style is consistent with the epigraphic dirham tradition of the taifa period.
