| Reverse description | Central field displays a multi-line Kufic Arabic inscription, likely containing the name of the Abbasid caliph, the local emir al-Harith b. Asad al-Khuttal, and the mint and date formula, arranged in four to five lines. The inscription is enclosed within a plain inner border, itself surrounded by a concentric marginal legend in Kufic script. The reverse follows the standard Abbasid provincial dirham typology, with bold raised lettering in angular Kufic style against a flat, unadorned field. |

Khuttal occupied a narrow corridor of territory in what is now the Tajik-Afghan borderlands, functioning as a semi-autonomous emirate under loose Samanid suzerainty during the late ninth and early tenth centuries. Al-Harith b. Asad's coinage is exceptionally rare; the region's political fragility and limited minting infrastructure meant production runs were small and geographically contained. Most surviving examples reached museum collections through nineteenth-century Russian archaeological expeditions into Transoxiana.
