Obverse description Central field features a multi-lobed cartouche enclosing a three-line Arabic inscription reading 'al-Malik al-Afdal / Nur al-Din / 'Ali', identifying the Ayyubid emir of Damascus. The legends are rendered in angular Naskhi script with bold relief characteristic of hammered Ayyubid silver coinage. An outer marginal legend runs around the inner dotted border, partially visible on this irregular flan. The overall design is typical of late 12th-century Ayyubid dirham production at Damascus.
