Qatar's first domestic coinage was issued in 1973, the year the Qatar Monetary Agency formally replaced the Qatar and Dubai Currency Board — a joint arrangement that had become obsolete after Dubai joined the UAE in 1971. These early QMA pieces represent the first coins issued under Qatar's fully independent monetary authority, just two years after the state's formal independence from Britain in September 1971.
