Andorra's pre-euro coinage existed in a peculiar legal limbo — the principality had no official currency of its own and used both French francs and Spanish pesetas concurrently, yet issued collector-oriented pieces denominated in diners anyway. The diner had no legal tender status in daily commerce and never circulated in any meaningful sense.
The rook denomination within this series is one of several chess-piece issues Andorra produced in the early 2000s as the country transitioned toward formal monetary arrangements with the EU, a process not completed until 2011.
