Andorra's relationship with the Catholic Church runs through its constitutional structure — the Bishop of Urgell serves as one of the country's two co-princes, a feudal arrangement dating to 1278 that has never been dissolved. This coin belongs to a series commemorating papal figures, issued under that same ecclesiastical authority. Pius XI, who reigned from 1922 to 1939, negotiated the Lateran Treaty in 1929 — the agreement that created Vatican City as a sovereign state and ended six decades of dispute between the Holy See and the Italian government.
