Additional information

Our Lady of Meritxell is the patron of Andorra, and the sanctuary housing her image was destroyed by fire in 1972 — an event that prompted the government to commission a new building from Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, completed in 1976. The 1 Diner denomination itself is essentially ceremonial; Andorra used French francs and Spanish pesetas as de facto currencies for most of the 20th century and only began issuing its own legal tender coinage in 2014 under a monetary agreement with the EU, making pre-agreement issues like this one collector pieces rather than circulating money from the outset.
