Sbeitla — ancient Sufetula — was the site of a catastrophic Byzantine defeat in 647 AD, when Arab forces under Abdullah ibn Saad routed the exarch Gregory, who had declared himself independent ruler of North Africa just months before the battle. The engagement effectively opened the Maghreb to Arab conquest. This coin was issued as part of Tunisia's broader commemorative program of the late 1960s, which used silver pieces to assert a distinct national historical identity rooted in pre-Islamic antiquity as much as in the Islamic period itself.
