Radu I ruled Wallachia in the shadow of his more celebrated brother Vladislav I, yet his monetary policy was anything but derivative. The dinar series he issued — drawing structurally from the Serbian dinar tradition that dominated Balkan silver coinage in the 14th century — reflects Wallachia's positioning between the Hungarian crown to the north and the expanding Ottoman pressure from the south. Radu maintained nominal vassalage to both powers at different points in his reign, a political tightrope that makes the assertion of an independent coinage all the more deliberate.
