Struck to commemorate the Food and Agriculture Organization's campaign to increase global protein production through fishing, this issue was part of a coordinated FAO coinage program that prompted dozens of countries to release themed coins throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. Tunisia's contribution honored Neptune specifically in reference to the country's deep Mediterranean fishing traditions and its dependence on the sea as an economic resource — not mere iconographic whimsy.
The FAO series coins were largely intended for distribution rather than circulation, and most examples survived in reasonable condition as a result.
