| Reverse description | Reverse field displays a multi-line Arabic Kufic inscription arranged in horizontal registers within a plain inner circle, bearing the name and titles of the Seljuq sultan Alp Arslan Abu Shuja', identified as al-Sultan al-Mu'azzam. An inner marginal band and outer marginal band carry additional Arabic legends. The flan is of irregular shape typical of hammered Islamic gold coinage, with a beaded border encircling the entire design. The bold, raised lettering is rendered in the angular Kufic script style prevalent in Seljuq numismatic art of the 5th century AH. |
