Obverse description Central field carries a multi-line Arabic Kufic inscription arranged in five horizontal lines, reading the Shahada and naming the Samanid overlord Nuh III (Nasr ibn Nuh) together with the name Mahmud. The inner field is enclosed by a circular marginal legend in Arabic Kufic script bearing the Quranic verse of Sura 9:33 (al-Tawba), running continuously around the periphery. The outer margin is further framed by a beaded or rope-pattern border, characteristic of late Samanid and early Ghaznavid coinage. The legends are struck in bold, angular Kufic script typical of eastern Islamic dinars of the late fourth century AH. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, as expected of a hammered gold dinar of this period.
