Hussein bin Talal's image appeared on Jordanian coinage throughout his 46-year reign, but the mid-1990s issues coincided with a period of cautious economic recovery following the severe IMF-mandated austerity measures Jordan adopted after the 1989 debt crisis. The dinar had been partially floated in 1988 and lost nearly half its value almost overnight — making a one-dinar coin a meaningful denomination to reintroduce in a stable, circulating form.
Hussein died in February 1999, making this 1996–1997 issue among the last Jordanian coinage to bear his portrait before the transition to Abdullah II.
