1 Dinar Hannibal

Tunisia's 1979 silver dinar series was issued under President Bourguiba's government as part of a broader program of nationalist commemorative coinage that consciously reached back to pre-Islamic North African history. Hannibal was a deliberate choice — a figure who fought Rome at its peak and nearly broke it, reclaimed here as a symbol of Carthaginian, and by extension Tunisian, heritage. The politics of that framing were never subtle.

KM#304 is occasionally found with uneven toning concentrated along the edge reeding, a consequence of the high-relief striking common to this series interacting with the .925 alloy during extended storage.
