Beschrijving voorzijde Left-facing bust of Habib Bourguiba, first President of the Tunisian Republic, rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and facial features. The effigy occupies the central field, with an Arabic legend arcing across the upper periphery reading the president's name and title. The date appears in Western numerals at the base of the portrait, flanked by the continuation of the Arabic inscriptions denoting his presidential title and the Tunisian Republic. The portrait was engraved by Hatem El Mekki in a realist style characteristic of mid-twentieth-century francophone coinage traditions.

Aanvullende informatie

Habib Bourguiba had himself depicted on Tunisian coinage almost continuously from independence in 1956 until his forced removal from power in 1987 — a span that produced numerous portrait variants as he aged, each approved by the man himself. This issue circulated through a period of significant economic strain, as Tunisia's ambitious development programs outpaced export revenues through the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the dinar under persistent devaluation pressure against the franc and dollar.

The Bourguiba dinar series was eventually retired alongside the president himself, when Prime Minister Ben Ali declared him medically unfit and assumed power on November 7, 1987.
