Additional information

Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the Central Bank of Iraq, this is one of the few silver commemoratives produced by the Ba'athist government during the early 1970s — a period when oil nationalization was reshaping state finances entirely. Iraq completed the nationalization of the Iraq Petroleum Company in June 1972, the same year this coin was struck, and the revenue expectations that followed briefly encouraged this kind of prestige minting.

The .500 fineness is notably low for a commemorative of this weight, a choice that kept silver content costs down without abandoning the material entirely.
