Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse depicts a uniformed bust of President Saddam Hussein in military dress, facing left, superimposed over the figure of an Arab warrior mounted on horseback and brandishing a sword, evoking the historical Battle of al-Qadisiyyah of AD 636. The composition is rendered in bold relief, contrasting the modern military figure with the classical equestrian warrior to symbolize continuity of Arab martial glory. An Arabic inscription in the upper field attributes a quotation to Saddam Hussein praising the restoration of the glories of al-Qadisiyyah. The name and title of President Saddam Hussein appear prominently within the legend surrounding the central design.

Aanvullende informatie

Struck to commemorate the 1400th lunar anniversary of the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah, the 636 AD engagement in which Arab Muslim forces decisively defeated the Sasanian Empire and opened the Iranian plateau to Islamic expansion. Saddam Hussein's government made deliberate use of the historical parallel — invoking the battle's name as ideological framing for the Iran-Iraq War, which began the same year this coin was issued. The timing was not coincidental.
