The Almohad Caliphate's square-within-circle gold coinage was among the most influential monetary designs in medieval Mediterranean commerce, circulating as far as sub-Saharan trade routes and deeply enough into Christian Iberia that Castilian and Portuguese mints eventually copied its format directly — the morabetino and maravedi both descend from this tradition.
