The legends identify the issuing ruler as Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abi Hammu and record the mint city of Tlemcen. A border of fine lines frames the central square, with marginal text running along the outer periphery of the cartouche. The irregular flan edges display surface roughness consistent with hand-struck North African gold coinage of the Zayyanid period. The epigraphy is bold and characteristic of the Maghrebi chancellery script employed on western Islamic coinage of the 15th century. |
