| Obverse description | Hammered gold dinar of irregular flan struck at Tunis during the reign of the Hafsid sultan Abu'l Abbas Ahmad II. The obverse features a central square panel containing the Shahada in multiple lines of Arabic Kufic-influenced script: 'There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God, He sent him with guidance and the religion of truth.' A circular marginal legend in Arabic surrounds the central square, completing the Quranic verse from Surat al-Tawba (9:33): 'to make it prevail over all religions, even if the polytheists are averse.' The field displays the characteristic geometric framing typical of Hafsid gold coinage, with the inscriptions executed in a bold, angular script style. |
