Additional information

Algeria's 25th independence anniversary in 1987 fell during a period of acute economic strain — oil revenues had collapsed following the 1986 price crash, gutting a state budget overwhelmingly dependent on hydrocarbons. Within two years the resulting austerity would fuel the October 1988 riots, the bloodiest civil unrest Algeria had seen since independence itself.
