Additional information

The Banque d'Algérie replaced the earlier bimetallic dinar with this stainless steel issue in 1992, a period when Algeria was descending into the civil conflict known as the Black Decade — a brutal internal war between the government and Islamist insurgents that killed tens of thousands through the mid-2000s. Coin production continued through it all, a function of necessity rather than stability.

The 25-year production run with minimal design change reflects Algeria's conservative approach to circulating coinage under a tightly managed state economy.
