Iraq's first independent central bank issue, launched under the National Bank of Iraq which had been established in 1947 to replace the Iraq Currency Board — a British colonial arrangement that had pegged the Iraqi dinar directly to sterling since 1931. The 1950 series marked the first time Iraq exercised direct domestic authority over its note issuance, though the irony is that the notes were still shipped from Bradbury Wilkinson's New Malden facility in Surrey.
Bradbury Wilkinson printed for dozens of newly independent or restructuring states in this period, and the technical quality is consistent with their work — intaglio printing, reliable registration. The watermark is the primary security feature, modest by later standards.
