Obverse description Seated Liberty facing left, draped in classical robes and seated upon a rock, her left hand resting on a heraldic shield inscribed LIBERTY, her right hand raised aloft holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian cap. The date appears in the lower exergue flanked on either side by a small arrow — a distinguishing feature of the 1873–1874 issue, introduced to denote the slight increase in authorized weight under the Coinage Act of 1873. The circular legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper periphery, and the entire design is framed by a beaded border.
