| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, the wings symbolising freedom of thought; the design is often mistaken for the Roman god Mercury, hence the coin's popular name. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim of the field, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in the lower left field. The date appears at the lower right, with the designer's monogram AAW incuse at the base of the neck truncation. The portrait is rendered in high-relief Art Nouveau style characteristic of Weinman's work. |
