The Deutsche Notenbank was the central bank of the Soviet occupation zone, and this 1948 1 Mark note belongs to the currency reform that split German monetary history in two. The western zones introduced the Deutsche Mark through the Bank deutscher Länder on 20 June 1948; the Soviets, unwilling to allow western-controlled currency to circulate in their zone, responded within days with their own reform, overprinting existing Reichsmark notes before purpose-printed issues like this one became available.
Giesecke & Devrient's Leipzig plant — nationalized under Soviet administration — handled production, making this one of the earliest postwar issues from that facility under East German authority.
