1 Denier Tournois

Jaffa and Ascalon was one of the four great lordships of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, and its coinage authorization reflects the unusual degree of monetary autonomy granted to the great vassals of Outremer. The denier tournois type was modeled on the coins of Tours — a deliberate choice signaling the Frankish identity of the settler nobility rather than any accommodation to local Byzantine or Islamic monetary traditions.

The county changed hands repeatedly during this period, falling to Saladin in 1187 and recovered only partially thereafter. Coins struck in the later part of this date range were issued under severely contracted territorial control.
