Mathilde de Hainaut's tenure as Princess of Achaea was turbulent from the start — her claim was contested, her reign brief, and her authority over the Frankish lordships of the Morea never fully consolidated. She ruled through a period when the Latin principalities in Greece were fracturing under Angevin pressure and Byzantine resurgence, and her coinage reflects that instability: billon deniers of this type are scarce survivors of a mint operating under genuinely precarious political conditions.
Metcalf's cataloguing of the MA1/b variety distinguishes it from related Achaean issues by subtle die characteristics that point to a single short production window, consistent with Mathilde's two-year reign.
