By 1702, Leopold I had been suppressing Hungarian Protestant rights for decades, and the kingdom was careening toward the Rákóczi Uprising that would formally erupt in 1703. These small silver deniers were among the last issued under his authority before Francis II Rákóczi's rebellion severed effective Habsburg administrative control over much of the country. The Nagybánya mint, which struck the bulk of Hungarian copper and small silver in this period, was captured by Kuruc forces in 1703.
