Additional information

Ferdinand II ruled León from 1157 until his death in 1188, consolidating Leonese territory against both Castilian pressure and Almohad incursions from the south. His billon coinage was issued from a kingdom that had only recently separated from Castile following the death of Alfonso VII, and these small deniers reflect a monetary system still finding its independent footing. The lion device on this type became the heraldic emblem so closely associated with León that it persists in Spanish royal arms to this day — Ferdinand II is largely credited with formalizing that association.
