The County of Görz occupied a strategically awkward position in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries — wedged between the ambitions of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, the expanding influence of the Babenberg dukes, and the nascent power of the Wittelsbach-linked Andechs dynasty. Engelbert III and Meinhard II issuing coinage jointly under the Görz name reflects a period of co-regency and shared dynastic administration that was more administrative necessity than political stability.
Lienz, as a mint site, served the alpine trade corridors linking Carinthia to the Veneto. The MEC XII attribution to #889 places this squarely within the broader Friesacher Pfennig tradition that dominated central European silver circulation through this period.
