Bohemond III ruled Antioch for nearly four decades, a reign marked by repeated confrontations with Byzantium, the Latin Church, and his own barons. In 1180 he repudiated his wife Theodora, a Byzantine princess, triggering a formal excommunication from the Patriarch of Antioch — a schism that divided the city's Latin community and almost certainly disrupted the normal functioning of the mint. Deniers attributable to his reign circulated alongside Byzantine and Islamic issues in a market where billon small change was perpetually short.

The Metcalf 380–390 range encompasses considerable die variation, and individual pieces within CCS 62 show meaningful differences in fabric and module that suggest multiple production runs across the full thirty-eight year span.
