Obverse description Central field features a cross pattée enclosed within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a circular legend reading the Doge's name and title in Latin. The inscription ✠ • PE • GRA • DVX • (Petrus Gradonicus Dux) is arranged around the central motif, separated by pellet stops. The entire design is characteristic of the Venetian medieval hammered billon denaro tradition, struck on a thin, irregularly shaped flan with a markedly crude and uneven surface. The relief is low and the legends are partially visible due to the irregular flan and weak strike typical of this small-denomination coinage.
