Pandolfo III Malatesta held Brescia from 1404 until Venetian forces took the city in 1421, a tenure marked by near-constant military maneuvering between Milan, Venice, and the papacy. His right to strike coin at Brescia derived from imperial privilege, and he used it — this denaro being among the smallest denominations he issued, circulating at the lowest level of daily commercial exchange in a city that changed hands repeatedly over the following decades.
