Obverse description A spread eagle displayed occupies the central field, rendered in a bold, stylized manner characteristic of medieval Sicilian hammered coinage. The eagle's wings are outstretched and its body faces forward, a longstanding heraldic emblem of the Norman and Aragonese rulers of Sicily. A partially legible circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, interrupted by the irregular flan edge.
