| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the AP monogram, a conjoined ligature of the letters A and P referencing Apulia, rendered in a bold, somewhat cursive medieval style within a plain inner circle. The monogram is flanked by two small pellets in the field. The surrounding legend reads +MAYNFRIDVS in Latin capital characters, identifying the issuer as Manfred, King of Sicily. The flan is irregular and the strike somewhat uneven, consistent with hammered billon coinage of the mid-13th century Hohenstaufen-era Sicilian mint. |
