Gregory of Montelongo arrived in northern Italy as a papal legate before parlaying that position into the patriarchate itself in 1251 — an appointment that sat uneasily with the local nobility throughout his tenure. The Patriarchate of Aquileia held temporal authority over a strategically contested strip of territory between the Venetian lagoon and the Alpine passes, and its coinage was as much a political declaration as a medium of exchange.

Bernardi's corpus remains the standard reference for Aquileian denari, with #22 placing this type firmly within Gregory's eighteen-year reign.
