The effigy is rendered in low relief with rudimentary facial features characteristic of Sicilian billon coinage of the mid-thirteenth century. The surrounding field contains the Latin legend arranged around the periphery between the inner circle and an outer beaded border. The legend reads +F • ROM • IPR` • SEP • AVG, identifying the issuer as Frederick, Emperor of the Romans, Ever Augustus.
