Obverse description The letters L, U, C, and A are arranged in the four quarters formed by a bold voided cross, with a small central globule at the intersection, composing the city name LUCA in cruciform disposition within a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend, rendered in uncial characters, reads OTTO INPERATOR invoking the name of Emperor Otto, a traditional attribution carried over from earlier Lucchese coinage. The overall design is executed in the crude, flat relief typical of late medieval Italian hammered billon issues, with an irregular flan characteristic of hand-struck production.
