Colombia's 1873 essai coinage was produced in connection with ongoing deliberations over decimal currency reform, with pattern issues sent to Paris for evaluation — France's Monnaie de Paris being the likely production source. Essais of this period were struck in extremely limited numbers for official examination rather than circulation, and surviving examples rarely appear on the market. The dual KM reference suggests at least two distinct die combinations were documented by researchers, a detail Restrepo's earlier cataloging had already flagged.
