Additional information

Surendra Vikram Shah ruled Nepal from 1847 effectively under the shadow of Jung Bahadur Rana, whose coup that year inaugurated over a century of hereditary Rana prime ministerial dominance. The Shah kings retained ceremonial authority while the Ranas held real power — coinage issued in the king's name during this period was administratively a Rana production.

The dam was the smallest unit in Nepal's traditional copper coinage hierarchy. KM#586.1 distinguishes this variety from related issues of the reign by specific die characteristics.
