The Dam was the smallest denomination in Nepal's traditional coinage hierarchy, and at 0.04 g it presented genuine technical difficulties for hand-hammering — a process still in use at the Kathmandu mint during this period. Girvan Yuddha Vikrama came to the throne as an infant in 1799 following the death of Rana Bahadur Shah, who had abdicated and gone into exile in Benares. The regency period that defined most of his reign left coin production largely in the hands of court officials rather than royal direction.
