Akbar's reign saw the most ambitious monetary reform in Mughal history. Around 1567, he overhauled the copper coinage entirely, standardizing the dam as the base unit of a tri-metallic system — gold mohurs, silver rupees, and copper dams — in fixed ratios that allowed tax collection and market pricing to function across an empire stretching from Kabul to Bengal. The Allahabad mint, known in imperial records as Illahabas, was established following Akbar's consolidation of the Doab region and ranked among the more active provincial copper-striking facilities.
The dam circulated at 40 to the rupee, a ratio Akbar's administration enforced with unusual rigor for the period.
