In 1996, The Gambia held its first presidential election following the 1994 military coup that brought Yahya Jammeh to power. The "Year of the Three Kings" designation references the turbulent succession of heads of state — Sir Dawda Jawara, who ruled since independence, was ousted by Jammeh's Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council, which itself underwent internal leadership shifts before Jammeh consolidated control and won the civilian election that year.
KM#65 is a commemorative rather than a circulation piece, struck in the larger crown format favored by the Franklin Mint and its contemporaries for such issues.
