Batenburg was a perpetual nuisance to the Habsburg monetary authorities in the Low Countries. The small barony on the Maas river held minting rights and used them aggressively, striking coins that closely imitated the weight and type of officially sanctioned Imperial issues — close enough to circulate freely, distinct enough to evade direct suppression. William V van Bronckhorst, who held the lordship through mid-century, presided over a mint that regional merchants tolerated and Brussels resented.
The Placards of 1539 and 1556 repeatedly attempted to curtail such petty lordship coinages. Batenburg kept minting anyway.
